About

Cook Islands were named after Captain Cook who sighted them in 1770. It is located within easy reach of Australia in the South Pacific Ocean, just northeast of New Zealand, between French Polynesia and American Samoa. Cook Islands are divided into two distinct groups: the Southern Cook Islands (mostly volcanic and hilly islands, with a few atolls) and the Northern Cook Islands (low coral atolls close to the equator).

The population here is less than 15,000 but there are over 50,000 Cook Islanders living in New Zealand, and over 30,000 in Australia. Those remaining have often spent time in Auckland, Melbourne or Sydney before returning home.

Cook Islands comprise 15 islands spread over a part of the Pacific. Scattered across close to 2.2 million square kilometres of the Pacific Ocean, the largest island is Rarotonga, site of the capital city, Avarua, known for its white-coral churches. Cook Islands were formed by volcanic activity; the northern group is older and consists of six atolls, which are sunken volcanoes topped by coral growth. The climate here is moderate to tropical.
